Organic Food Makes You A Self-Righteous, Judgmental A-Hole

File this one under, "well no ****, Sherlock" for me. We try to eat local as much as possible, and organic falls into that category a lot, particularly because they are more open about what they feed and so on than "normal" farmers. I know I'm not an asshole (would appreciate no comments), but a lot of people in those circles are very self righteous. Eating organic is something people do because they have read something somewhere that talks about health benefits and all that, which makes them right and the rest of the world wrong.
And they're not afraid to tell us all that.

You're exactly right. My father in law eats strictly organic, but he never says a word about it. No condescension, no preaching, he just eats it and doesn't care what others eat.
Now the majority of those people? Exactly like the article describes. They won't hesitate to tell you why they are smarter than you, how horrible your food is compared to theirs, how intellectually superior they are, etc.
It's actually because of that that I grin a little when a new negative report comes out about organic food. I'm convinced that other than meat, eggs and dairy, organic food isn't better/safer/etc. at all.

I disagree with you there. I eat regular veggies as well as organic, but would rather have organic when possible. If I can avoid putting any sort of insect poison in my body, I'm all for it.
And I don't know if it is more due to being local or being organic, but I find the organic stuff we eat tastes much better and fresher than the store-bought stuff. Emily always says the difference between a cucumber from Kroger and one from her garden (or our CSA) is night and day.

Side by side blind taste tests have been done numerous times, and neither side has ever been a clear winner. The taste difference is likely mental.
I can't remember which thread here I posted the info about organic food in, but the uric acid from the fertilizer they use for organic is way more toxic to your body than any trace poisons on your commercial stuff. The difference being that with organics, it's inside the food and you have no choice but to ingest it, and you can wash commercial stuff
But if you're buying local, the freshness factor might be a reason it tastes better. Commercial stuff is weeks old in most cases. Then again, if it's organic and at the grocery store, it's even older, because it has to travel farther.
As far as pesticide differences go, organic pesticides might be worse, but we'll never know. Those products aren't regulated like commercial poisons are, so we don't know what their harmful effects may be. Most organic pesticides contain high volumes of eucalyptus, which if I'm not mistaken, is one of the most toxic things on the planet.

you're probably right Goal.
Just the same...I love me some thick steak. and at the turn on a hot day? nothing better than a dog with a couple frosty beers.
btw...does any of this make sense anymore as we move into genetically engineered foods?

Oh, I don't only eat organic food, but a fresh cut steak from the farm is pretty damned tasty, organic or not. My wife hates hot dogs, so I don't get them often, but I love them too even though I have to try not to think about what I'm eating when I'm eating it.

I would say these people exist in every facet of life. The non-smoker who tells every smoker they see about how cigarettes are destroying their lungs? The neighbor who likes to tell you why his lawn is so much nicer than yours...its just a personality type, IMO.

The worst is the non smoker who walks up to smokers and fake coughs. I want to hit those people in the face every time. You don't see non drinkers going up to drinkers and throwing up on them.
You're right though. These people exist everywhere. Health nuts, Religious fanatics, Teachers, Non-smokers, etc. and none is any less irritating than the other. Except college graduates that are condescending when talking to people who are either dropouts or only have a HS diploma. They are quite possibly the most intolerable people in the world.
